Rental Terms
All vehicle rentals are governed by a comprehensive Rental Agreement that you will receive upon booking confirmation or at the time of vehicle collection. This agreement outlines the terms, conditions, insurance coverage, applicable charges, and your responsibilities during the rental period. In case of any discrepancies between these Terms and the Rental Agreement, the Rental Agreement will prevail.
Eligibility Criteria
Renting a vehicle requires:
- To rent a vehicle from Stornoway Car Hire, you must be at least 21 years old, although age restrictions may differ based on the vehicle type. Drivers under 25 may incur additional fees. You need a valid full driving licence suitable for the vehicle category, held for the duration stated in the Rental Agreement. Valid identification and proof of current address are required, along with payment information and a security deposit. Additional requirements may apply as outlined in the Rental Agreement.
3. Reservations and Payments
- Reservations can be made via our website, by phone, or directly at our Stornoway office. To confirm your booking, a deposit may be necessary. The remaining balance and a security deposit are usually required upon vehicle pickup. All prices are listed in British Pounds (£) and include VAT when applicable. We accept major credit and debit cards, ensuring secure transactions through trusted payment processors.
Vehicle Pickup and Drop-off
- At the time of vehicle collection, it is important to conduct a thorough inspection and promptly report any pre-existing damage. A vehicle condition report will be filled out and signed to document the state of the car. Upon return, the vehicle should be in the same condition as when it was collected, accounting only for standard wear and tear. Any new damage will be evaluated and charged as necessary. Ensure the vehicle is returned with the same level of fuel as received; refueling fees will apply if the fuel level is lower. Late returns may result in extra charges, so please notify us as soon as possible if you expect to return the vehicle late. You will be liable for any parking fines, traffic violations, or other charges incurred during the rental, along with an associated administration fee.
Insurance and Liability Terms
- All car rentals include basic third-party insurance. For complete coverage details and excess amounts, please refer to your Rental Agreement. Additional insurance options may be offered to lower your financial exposure. It is advisable to review these options thoroughly. You will be liable for damage or loss up to the excess amount, unless additional coverage is in place. Any damage resulting from negligence, misuse, or violation of these Terms remains your responsibility, irrespective of insurance.
Cancellation and Modifications
Cancellation and amendment policies differ based on the type of booking and the notice provided. For precise information, please consult your booking confirmation or Rental Agreement. Keep in mind that late cancellations or no-shows could incur additional charges.
Prohibited Activities
Prohibited Uses of the Vehicle
- The vehicle must not be used for any illegal activities, including racing or off-roading. Transporting hazardous materials is prohibited. Sub-letting to others or allowing unauthorized drivers is not allowed. Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs is strictly forbidden. The vehicle should only be used for its intended purpose, and compliance with passenger and weight limits is mandatory. Any travel outside of the agreed geographical boundaries requires prior authorization.
Breach of these terms may lead to rental cancellation and extra fees.
Liability Limitations
To the fullest extent allowed by English and Welsh law, Stornoway Car Hire will not be responsible for any indirect, incidental, special, or consequential damages, including loss of profits, data, or business, resulting from your use of our services. Our maximum liability for any claims is limited to the total amount paid for rentals in the past year. This limitation does not apply to liability for death or personal injury resulting from negligence, or for fraudulent actions.
9. Applicable Law
These Terms are governed by the laws of England and Wales. Disputes will fall under the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts in these regions.

We reserve the right to update these Terms at any time. Changes take effect immediately upon posting on our website. Continued use of our services indicates your acceptance of the revised Terms.
